Carol Bardzel

Patient

Every voice needs to be heard.

I got Covid November 2020 so bad I could not breathe. Went to the ER was put on a ventilator. I was airlifted to another hospital. Was on it for 18 days only thing I remember was them waking me up from a coma and seeing my family on a TV monitor. Couldn't be could hear my daughter who is a pharmacist asking me questions. But couldn't answer. She said for yes move your right hand and for no move your left. Got off the ventilator and is all I can hear is a phone ringing off the hook in my room. Finally after nurse came in and said your daughter is trying to call you. At that point my fingers were swollen, couldn't move, couldn't sit up. I felt like a rubber band. No strength no muscles. So found out later my daughter call and said she is going to need help she will not be able to get or use the phone on her own. The nurse did come in and put the phone to my ear. I was able to talk a little. My daughter kept telling me I got to try to move. To gain your strength. She said they have your cell phone you need to call dad he need to hear from you. He is so so worried. They did give me my cell phone but my fingers where so swollen I couldn't press the numbers. Finally the nurse helped getting my in password in the phone. And my notifications after 19 days went crazy. Then my door ring popped up and there was my husband on the front porch. And heard me call his name. Then he called me and was able to answer. After 3 days I was sent to rehab to learn how to walk and get my body moving. Then after 1 week went to another rehab closer to my home. It was a 2 hour ambulance ride but when I arrived the ambulance crew was awesome and gave me a few minutes with my husband. I was there a few weeks then went home with a walker 3 days before Christmas. Then 6 mouth of out patient rehab. I still have issue joint pain and other issues. But give it my best everyday. Just wish I can get back the my old self. The doctors told me my daughter gave them a run for there money. She was on the phone with them daily. I really believe she saved my life! Still many issues years later. Sorry so long! It seems like the patient have been forgotten about and been to so many doctors they don't know anything and can't help.
